There have been many bizarre, offensive and outlandish theories put forth by the Starved Rock Sleuthettes over the past few months. Let's examine one.
Much has been made of the roll of 35 mm film found in Mrs. Mildred Lindquist's camera at the crime scene following the murders. Because the film was not advanced correctly, there were multiple exposures created. Below is a portion of one of those images:
This obviously double- and perhaps even triple-exposed image was seized upon by the SRM group as proof of the alleged "cover-up" perpetrated by authorities desperate to solve the case. Then the fun began. CathyDin O'Barrell theorized that the woman on the left, Frances Murphy, was actually photographed inside a restaurant frequented by the victims called the Vendome, located inside the Francis (later known as the Kaskaskia) Hotel in LaSalle.
CathyDin speculated that Mrs. Murphy's picture was taken while she was seated at a table (yes, bundled up in her winter coat and scarf) and that the shadowy figure(s) behind her in the trees were hiding behind decorative potted plants inside said restaurant. First Ms. O'Barrell said they were waiters, then it was the killers coming to abduct them from the restaurant and take them to the Gorman house.
There were also many references made to "Photoshop" having been employed to alter the photographs, despite the fact that neither personal computers nor any such software existed in 1960, the year in which the slayings occurred.
CathyDin: I know this photo has been altered, and the figures on the left were supposed to be blurred out. Does anyone else think it looks like she is sitting at a table? It almost looks like the photo was taken while they were having lunch and they cropped this into a snowbank.
Another Sleuthette chimes in: Good point. Why would she pose behind a snowbank when a better pose would have been in front of it?
CathyDin: Because it was a table! ....... Maybe those men were waiters all in black?
Other Sleuthette: I read somewhere that they were surprised when the film was developed and they saw faces in the background. Then how could the media have "photo shop'd" them if the images were there right from the start?
Billie Rubin: It is shopped as in photo shopped to make it look like they were on the trail going down to the canyon. I think the men in the back ground was the actual photo but they just did not see that till too late. So they tried to cover it up saying they were wrong about the shadowy figures.
CathyDin: Yep, I say waiters!
Above is a closer look at the area of the photo in question (again, that's Mrs. Murphy) with arrows to indicate the shadowy figure(s) eventually dismissed as unrelated background detail by those investigating the crime in 1960. After some more idle speculation, CathyDin returned to her new pet theory:
Let's go back to the restaurant. Maybe they were having breakfast or lunch on Tuesday? Most of the people here think the women weren't killed in the canyon.
Could these gentlemen in black be sneaking up behind the women dining at the Vendome, to kidnap them and take them back to the Gorman House?
There could have been plants with leaves in the restaurant.

As a result of this ridiculous discussion, a few days later CathyDin came up with this crudely cut-and-pasted image, receiving kudos for her effort from her lunatic peers:
Billie Rubin: Thank you for sharing again. It seems crystal clear to me you are right. Original photo taken in the dinning room. Now who do you think decided to photo shop them as to that it was taken outside. The police? The paper? And if the paper did it on there own why would they then admit to it?

Tepid Starch: Hall of fame! JTW
So the women were having lunch at the Lodge when they were being killed in the canyon? It makes as much sense as the Confession. Or the book. JTW ( Great work Cathy!)

And there you have it, folks. Case closed, apparently. The three ladies were never in St. Louis Canyon, you see, but were murdered elsewhere and their lifeless bodies lowered or dropped into the canyon afterward.
As Mr. Starch points out: ... in order to frame a lone perpetrator, you need to create a scenario where the crime is plausible. The public responds to pictures. Tell the story with pictures. And the pictures put the women in the canyon. The actual murderers "owned" the Daily Crimes. (Originally posted on Facebook Oct. 2, 2013)
Not to mention this nonsense:
CathyDin O'Barrell: This article said that two of the women were found tied together with twine, with many bruises about their legs. This makes sense to me if they were lowered into the canyon and hit the sides on the way down. Also would make sense why the ropes were cut away, because they would show that they were in fact lowered in, and then pushed into the crevice.
Tepid Starch: …if you go out to the canyon, it is possible to lower the women over the side with ropes, and just one man could swing them into the cave.
CathyDin: That was my thought when Alice said they were lowered down, that they were swung into the crevice so as to be out of site. They would have to have a crew on top and down below. (Above remarks originally posted on Facebook Sept. 15, 2013)
And one more time from Ms. Rubin for the hard of hearing:
Billie Rubin: The women were never in the canyon until after they were murdered.
I am going to see if you are listening. The men in suits did not go into the canyon on the trail the women were said to have gone INTO THE CANYON ON!! Again the women WERE NEVER IN THE CANYON. (Originally posted on Facebook Nov. 13, 2013)
